Why Choose Dental Crowns in Torbay?

Once A Tooth Has Become Severely Damaged A Dental Crown Is Often The Most Effective Treatment Option.

Commonly known as a ‘cap’, a dental crown is fabricated outside the mouth by one of our master dental technicians and fits over the entire surface of the tooth. This acts to strengthen the tooth, especially when they have been significantly weakened following root canal treatment.

Our master technicians use super high-strength tooth-coloured ceramic materials that look, act and feel like natural teeth. Veneers are similar to crowns, however, they are generally used only on front teeth. Made of the same high-strength ceramic material also handcrafted by our master technicians, veneers are usually used to modify the shape and colour of damaged, worn or fractured front teeth.

Treatment Process

Fitting a dental crown typically involves several steps over two dental visits. Here’s a brief overview of the process:

Preparation

Preparing your tooth for a new crown

Our dentist will examine the tooth and surrounding gums. X-rays are taken to check the roots of the tooth and the surrounding bone. If the tooth has extensive decay or there's a risk of infection or injury to the tooth's pulp, a root canal treatment may be necessary before the crown procedure.

Fitting

Fitting your dental crown

The permanent crown is checked for fit and color. Adjustments are made as necessary to ensure the crown fits properly and the bite is correct.
Once the fit and appearance are satisfactory, the dentist uses a special dental cement to permanently bond the crown to the tooth. The dentist removes any excess cement and ensures the crown is securely in place.

How to care for your new crown

We will work alongside you to provide a personalized plan of how best to maintain your smile and prevent future damage. After reviewing your current hygiene routine, our hygiene team will be able to give you the best advice.

Post-Procedure Care

It's normal to experience some sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures after the crown is fitted.

We recommend maintaining good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly. Crowns can still be affected by decay and gum disease if proper care is not taken. Regular dental check-ups are important to ensure the crown and surrounding teeth remain in good condition.

Dental crowns can be made from various materials, including porcelain, ceramic, metal alloys, and composite resin. The choice of material depends on factors such as the location of the tooth, the amount of natural tooth remaining, the function of the tooth, and your personal preference. Porcelain and ceramic crowns are popular for front teeth due to their natural appearance, while metal alloys may be preferred for back teeth due to their durability.

With proper care, dental crowns can last between 10 and 15 years, or even longer. To extend the life of your crown, maintain good oral hygiene by brushing twice a day and flossing daily, avoid chewing hard foods or ice, and visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings. If you grind your teeth at night, consider wearing a night guard to protect your crown.
