Improve your Oral Health

Reduce the risks.
At South Devon Dental, we believe that all our patients should have confidence in their smile. One of the keys to maintaining a healthy smile is regularly visiting your dentist and hygienist. Not only do regular visits help to maintain your smile, recently, we have seen how a healthy mouth can also reduce the risk of heart disease, strokes and diabetes.
What is it?
An oral health assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of your teeth, gums, and other soft tissues.
Who is it for?
We recommend all patients undergo Oral health assessments to ensure early detection and prevention of potential dental problems.
Why get it?
Oral health assessments can help you identify potentially preventable dental problems.

Comprehensive Assessments

Our aim is to complete an holistic examination of all areas of mouth, face, head and neck. Where appropriate, our clinicians will use a range of diagnostic tools to fully understand and diagnose potential problems that may arise in the future or require addressing before further damage occurs.

Questions About Oral Health Assessments

Here are some of the common questions we’re asked about Oral Health Assessments. All of our treatments are tailored to suit your individual needs. Because of this we often recommend a consultation with one of our dental team if you’re considering any treatments, so we can assess and advise the best options available to you.  If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact us.

Oral health assessments are included in some of our membership plans but routine checkups start from £70. View the full dental price guide here to see the cost of dental treatments.

During an oral health assessment, your dentist will:

  • Review Your Medical and Dental History: Discuss any medical conditions, medications, and past dental treatments.
  • Conduct a Visual Examination: Check your teeth, gums, tongue, cheeks, and other soft tissues for signs of disease or abnormalities.
  • Perform Diagnostic Tests: Take dental X-rays, if necessary, to look for hidden issues like cavities, bone loss, or impacted teeth.
  • Evaluate Your Bite and Jaw: Assess how your teeth come together and examine your jaw joints for any signs of dysfunction.
  • Discuss Oral Hygiene Practices: Review your oral hygiene routine and provide recommendations for improvement.

It is generally recommended to have an oral health assessment at least twice a year during your regular dental check-ups. However, the frequency may vary based on your individual needs and risk factors. People with a higher risk of dental issues, such as those with gum disease, a history of frequent cavities, or certain medical conditions, may need more frequent assessments. Your dentist will advise you on the appropriate schedule for your oral health assessments.
