Dental sedation is generally safe when administered by a trained and experienced dentist. However, as with any medical procedure, there are potential risks and side effects. These can include drowsiness, dry mouth, nausea, headache, and, in rare cases, allergic reactions. Your dentist will review your medical history and discuss any potential risks and side effects before proceeding with sedation. They will also monitor you closely during the procedure to ensure your safety.
Preparation for a dental appointment involving sedation may include the following:
- Fasting: Avoid eating or drinking for a specified period before the procedure, usually six to eight hours, especially for IV sedation or general anesthesia.
- Medication: Inform your dentist of any medications or supplements you are taking, as some may need to be paused or adjusted.
- Transportation: Arrange for someone to drive you to and from the appointment, as the effects of sedation can impair your ability to operate a vehicle safely.
- Post-Procedure Care: Follow any specific instructions provided by your dentist regarding recovery and post-procedure care. Plan to rest for the remainder of the day after your appointment.
What Is Intravenous Sedation?
IV Sedation involves being administered a sedative drug through an injection in the back of your hand. The sedative drug will make you feel more relaxed and slightly sleepy without you losing control of your body. As well as reducing stress and anxiety during the procedure, one of the main side effects of sedation is amnesia. This means that you will have little recollection of the procedure and will feel as if it only lasted a few minutes, even if in reality it took longer.
